“Why Do You Spend So Much Money on Clothes?”

I get a bit peeved off when people ask me this. Firstly – I don’t! I spend some money on clothes but not a huge amount. And the clothes I wear last me years as things go in and out of fashion, as my own style shifts, as my size wobbles about from 6-10 in an incredibly annoying manner.

But I mean, so what if I do like to spend money on clothes? Why do you spend money on anything? The simple answer for me is that you spend money on things that make you happy. The way they might do that varies. A new laptop might make you happy because it’s more powerful and you can use it for more things (hello Callum and his new Macbook Pro!). A new washing machine might make you happy because it’s made your life a little bit easier.

Clothes make me happy. They can change my entire outlook one day because I’ve got that new jacket on and it’s warm and comfy, and it makes my waist look good. And another day you’re late for work in the morning because for some reason you find you hate all your clothes, but then you put together that 30th outfit and – hey presto! – it’s right. I’ve shrunk into my seat on the tube on the way to work because my frantically assembled outfit just isn’t doing it for me, and other days I’m almost swaggering from my happiness in what I’m wearing. And this is NOT just a girl thing! Callum’s male flatmate came back from work one day in a bad mood and told me it was all because he wore the ‘wrong’ thing to work.

So there you go. That’s how I justify spending money on clothes anyway. What are your thoughts on the matter?
